HOME
You may benefit from genetic counseling if:
- You'll be thirty-five years old or older on your due date.
- You, your baby's father, or a blood relative of either of you has a genetic disorder, birth defect, or developmental delay.
- You or your baby's father has had genetic testing that indicates your baby could inherit a genetic disorder.
- The baby's father is your close blood relative.
- You've had a stillbirth, three or more unexplained miscarriages, or a child who died in infancy.
- Your ethnic background puts your baby at a higher risk for a genetic disorder, such as Tay-Sachs disease or sickle cell anemia.
- You have a medical condition that may affect your baby's health or require you to take medications or undergo treatments that may affect your baby's health.
- During this pregnancy you've been exposed to substances that may cause birth defects, such as radiation or toxic chemicals; you've had an infection that may cause birth defects, such as rubella, chickenpox, or cytomegalovirus (CMV); or you've used alcohol or drugs.
- You've had a prenatal test that shows a possible problem or a positive diagnosis of a genetic disorder in your baby.
- You're worried about your chances of having a child with a birth defect or genetic disorder and you want to know more about the available testing.
- Any of the preceding points describes you, and knowing more would help you choose a course of treatment, prepare better for your baby's needs, or decide whether to continue your pregnancy.
