CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS IN PMS

PMS is controversial because its cause is still shrouded in mystery. For years the idea that PMS is just a sign of a 'neurotic woman' has hampered funding for research. If s only in the last 10 or 15 years that PMS has been taken seriously and that quality research into its cause has begun. This research has proved once and for all that chemical and hormonal factors strongly influence PMS. It is definitely not 'all in the mind'.

Although it's known that there are biological influences in PMS, quite what they are continues to divide the experts. At the moment research centres on three areas:

In fact it may turn out that PMS is a combination of all three. At the moment if s a bit of a chicken and egg argument. Which came first – the hormone imbalance or the brain chemical disorder or the nutritional deficiencies?

One of the emerging themes from PMS research is that the hormones, nutrition and brain chemistry are closely linked, PMS probably has no single cause but may occur when several things go wrong at the same time. A poor diet may lead to low levels of brain chemicals which plummet even lower at times of the month when oestrogen is low.

Or there may be different types of PMS, each with a different cause.

For this reason it is best to keep an open mind towards treatment. Doctors, and women, often become frustrated because there are so many different treatments for PMS. What works for one woman may not work for another. And until the causes of PMS have been completely unravelled PMS therapy will remain a mishmash of different approaches.

The key is to find out what you can do to help yourself and where to go if you cannot cope on your own.
